Shoulder dystocia occurs when an infant’s shoulder remains lodged against the mother’s pubic bone after the head emerges. This kind of obstetrical emergency requires specific procedures, and if they are handled incorrectly, the mother or infant can be seriously injured or killed.
Shoulder dystocia can lead to blood and oxygen loss, damage and paralysis to the arm’s nerve fibers, and even death when the umbilical cord is constricted. A doctor’s excessive use of tension can physically tear the nerve fibers on the baby’s spinal column resulting in a condition called Erb’s palsy, a paralysis that can require extensive medical rehabilitation; in some instances, it affects the child permanently.
